Develop Knowledge Through Teaching
In the culture of most western countries learning is seen as consuming as much content as possible. I certainly lost my ability to learn in that way simply because I couldn’t make sense of it. I wouldn’t be able to learn content in a consumer-like behavior without questioning the purpose of learning it in that way. If you ask me a question I have to think longer than people who remembered the exact wording of their notes, but I have a more detailed understanding of the subject too.
The consumer-like behavior of learning we learned in school originates in teaching methods similar to chalk-and-talk. There is some nuance to this if the teacher can provide the information engagingly.
Sometimes there are only a few options when it comes to teaching a new topic because there is little to no background knowledge. Building the background knowledge is crucial to developing a knowledge framework.
